Stains & damage

Why Is My Glass Balcony Railing Cloudy?

A cloudy glass railing gets one name for three problems. This page splits them for an owner pricing a guest turn, and it says where a cloth stops.

Cleaning will not fill a pit a fingernail catches on a cloudy glass railing. If the nail slides, the haze is film and a wash can lift it. If the nail catches, the pane is already rough, and another visit will not put glass back. Bay Balcony prices the walkable floor, not a restoration. On eighty square feet that wash is $160, before a guest arrives.

Why is my glass balcony railing cloudy?

People treat one white pane as a ruined pane. That skips the split. A cloudy glass railing can be mineral film, salt crystals sitting on a coating, or a rough patch where alkaline runoff from a concrete lip has already bitten the sheet. A guest complaint does not say which.

Note

The belief that salt ate the pane is the one this page retires.

Pilkington, on self-cleaning glass, says coastal spray can leave salt crystals parked on that coating. Parked means on the surface. A wipe is still the first move. Ordering a replacement panel before a nail has crossed the haze spends a capital bill on a film.

Vitro's 2018 residue bulletin is the etching source we trust. Rain soaks a concrete lip, carries alkaline material onto the pane, and can stain or etch in some cases. Sea salt is not the actor in that bulletin. The salt-air guide is the metal and the crust. The hard-water spots guide is the rings a drop leaves.

On a Florida waterfront, Tampa Bay and downtown St. Petersburg get that crust and that drip on the same afternoon.

How do you run the fingernail test?

The belief is that dull means etched. The check is one dry nail, not a bottle of restorer.

If rain is on the sheet, blot it until the patch looks dry. Then drag one fingernail across the dull area, lightly, the way you test a paint chip. A slide means the cloud is sitting on the pane. A catch means the pane itself is rough.

A catch means etch. A wash will not fill it. Do not follow a catch with a razor, a scrub pad, or a cream sold as a glass rebuild.

Run the pass on a dry sheet. Water hides the catch. If you judged the pane while it was wet, dry it and run the nail again before you call the railing finished.

If the nail slides, text a daylight photo and we will price the floor before the guest turn.

Can etched glass be restored?

The belief is that a polish, a vinegar soak, or a second cleaning puts the surface back. It does not. Etch is glass that is already gone. A cloth cannot lay a new surface down.

A shop can sometimes polish a light etch once the pane is off the frame and flat on a bench. A fixed balcony railing is not that bench. We do not sell that polish. If the nail caught, call the association or a glazier. Do not book another wash as if the pit were dirt.

If the nail slid, the bill is the floor you can walk, at the published $2 card. Eighty square feet of that floor is the $160 figure we use for a typical rental turn. Neither downtown St. Petersburg nor downtown Tampa adds a drive charge. There is no hose.

When the nail slides, hired spot work is the hard-water spot page. The full glass and rail wash is the glass railing page. Neither visit fills a catch.

Split the invoice the way the nail splits the pane. A slide is a floor price before the guest arrives. A catch is a panel.

What would yours cost?

Length times depth, in feet. Pace it off if you have no tape: a normal stride is close to three feet.

No minimum, no trip fee, no heavy-soil surcharge. We confirm the price before we book. Prefer email? info@baybalcony.com

Frequently asked questions

Should a cloudy railing be replaced before the next guest?

Not from the sofa. A slide under a fingernail is film, and film is a wash before check-in. A catch is a panel question for the association or a glazier. A daylight photo is how we split the two.

Can vinegar or a cream polish restore etched railing glass?

A mild acid can loosen mineral film that is still sitting on top. It cannot replace glass that is already gone. If the nail still catches after a real wash, stop. More product will not level the pit.

Is the haze from salt air on the coast?

Salt can leave a crust you wipe off, including on coated glass. That crust is not an etch. The etching line glass makers publish is alkaline material carried off concrete. The salt page is the rail metal, and this page is the pane.
